Photos of 11th Annual Pagan Alliance festival in Berkeley CA

May 27, 2012 in Events, Interfaith, Pagan Groups, Pagan Leaders

On Saturday, May 12, 2012 the Pagan Alliance held its eleventh Annual Pagan Festival at the Civic Center Park in downtown Berkeley, CA.  The event lasted from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm.  Beginning at noon there was a parade around a few blocks of the downtown streets including University Avenue leading in a circle back to the park where the parade began.

This annual event, “ is a multi-cultural, interfaith Pagan Pride celebration that brings together sisters and brothers of all indigenous, Earth -based, and nature centered polytheistic beliefs in pride and celebration, as well as those who support arts, music ceremony, theater, and dance within the Interfaith Pagan Community.”

The theme for this years event was ”Paradigm Shift.“

If we can see things in new ways, we have a chance to create new systems, new ways of being, new songs, and new structures.  In dropping our old assumptions for even one moment, we have that moment to discover what we deeply desire.”

Each year the festival committee chooses one local prominent Pagan to be named as that year’s Keeper of the Light. In 2011 this position went to Yeshe Rabbit Matthews, and for 2012 the honor went to T. Thorn Coyle.  The Keeper of the Light represents the Pagan Alliance throughout the year at various public events and performs ritual duties at the main festival ritual.

The festival is one of a number of fund raising events for The Pagan Alliance.  Some of the funds donated help to sponsor other local Pagan organizations and related causes.  These include the Berkeley World Music Festival,   The Circle of Dionysos, the Patrick McCollum Foundation, and the Spiral Scouts of Richmond and San Francisco.

Each year the festival works with the San Francisco Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Transgender Pride Parade and celebration  to trade volunteers between organizations to help with both events.  This year people from the San Franciso Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Parade served as security for the Pagan Parade.

Here are pictures of some of the festival’s main stage  performers.  Performances began in the morning and continued throughout the day with a break for the parade.  It was a wonderful opportunity for a picnic in the park with free entertainment.

Interfaith Tent Press Conference for Occupy the Farm Tomorrow

May 16, 2012 in Uncategorized

Tomorrow, Thursday, May 17, 2010, Members of the Interfaith Tent @ Oakland will hold a press conference at Sproul Plaza on the U.C. Berkeley Campus.  This event will take place at 2PM in response to the closure and arrests at the Occupy the Farm site.  The following is the description provided to Bay Area Pagan Newswire Collective and is also available on the events facebook page.  T Thorn Coyle will be speaking at this event on behalf of the Interfaith Tent.

“Community organizations in Albany and Berkeley have spent years in unsuccessful negotiations with the University to turn this rich agricultural land into an urban farm. Now in recent weeks hundreds of activists, community members, students and local farmers have transformed their hope into reality on the five-acre piece of land directly across from the University Village in Albany. Thousands of starter plants were prepared and planted in rows, and raised beds using permaculture inspired techniques. Thousands of gallons of community donated water have been carried from cars, bicycles, trucks and vans as a response when the university cut off the water supply. Farmers, tools and equipment have been removed by police force and the crops are in danger.

Members of the Interfaith Tent are engaged in social justice, nonviolent action and community building. They are gathering to support the Farm and invite others to join them in insuring that this publicly owned farmland be used for farming. They see it as a key effort to use public resources to meet the urgent need for community grown food and farming skills for people of all ages amidst accelerating economic challenge.”

International Pagan Coming Out Day

May 2, 2012 in Uncategorized

Today, May 2, 2012, is the Second Annual International Pagan Coming Out Day.  While this non-profit organization is new on the Pagan scene, it has caught on fast and created quite a stir online of Pagan supporters and advocates.

The International Pagan Coming Out Day organization’s mission statement says that ““IPCOD is a not-for-profit organization working to achieve greater acceptance and equality for Pagans at home, at work, and in every community. We exist to provide resources and encouragement for Pagans who chose to come out, provide a voice for those Pagans who cannot yet come out, reduce stigma by putting a human face on Paganism and partner with non-Pagan allies”

The website ( http://pagancomingoutday.org/) features information about the orgins of this day, celebration information and the IPCOD guide to coming out of the closet.  Other resources, including legal resources are available on the website.

The IPCOD website states,

”Coming out to someone is a decision only you can make and it’s a decision best made when you are ready to do so. IPCOD encourages Pagans who are ready to come on out!

There are benefits, personally and for our religious community as a whole, as more Pagans come out. Some of these benefits include the reduction of anxiety caused by living a double life and creating a climate of greater acceptance for all Pagans.

On our website you can find information such as:

Our Guide to Coming Out

What we mean when we talk about coming out

How hosting a Ball can help achieve equity

How to become a local IPCOD Organizer

Towards the bottom of the Home Page are articles and personal in or out stories sent to us by Pagans detailing their experiences coming ‘out’ or recounting what happened that has caused them to stay ‘in’ for now.”

Bay Area Pagan Newswire Collective will be looking to gather responses from bay area Pagans about this new found Pagan holiday and reactions to the internet popularity.
